Syrian government security forces and tankshave been deployed across and around the capital, Damascus. About 2,000 troopsattacked rebels to try to recapture areas near the city. Troops entered mostlySunni Muslim areas east of the capital. The government has lost control ofthose areas during the past two weeks. Activists say at least 19 civilians andrebel fighters were killed in the clashes Sunday. The Syrian Observatory forHuman Rights said 72 people were killed across the country Sunday.

Negotiators for the Taliban in Afghanistanhave met with American officials in Qatar on Sunday. The goal of the talks isto build trust and prepare both sides for peace talks. The negotiators are alsodiscussing the possible release of Taliban prisoners at the United Statesmilitary base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

United Nations nuclear inspectors are in Iranto investigate possible secret military parts of the Iranian nuclear program.The International Atomic Energy Agency team arrived in Tehran on Sunday for athree-day visit. Herman Nackaerts is leading the investigators. Before he leftthe agency headquarters in Vienna, he said he wants Iran to discuss with hisinvestigators the accusations that Iranian officials are trying to developnuclear weapons. Iran has repeatedly denied the accusations and refused todiscuss them with the IAEA or world powers. It is not clear which areas the UNnuclear inspectors will visit in Iran or which Iranian officials they willmeet.

An Iraqi political alliance says it willend a month-long boycott of parliament. An Iraqiya spokeswoman said Sunday thealliance's lawmakers will attend parliamentary meetings this week for the firsttime since mid-December. Iraqiya's announcement followed a meeting of itsleaders. Iraqiya said it has not decided whether to end a separate boycott ofcabinet meetings chaired by Iraq's Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Thepolitical crisis began last month when the prime minister ordered the arrest ofIraq's Sunni vice president. He also asked parliament to fire a Sunni deputyprime minister who described Mr. M materials and drovearound the city. Organizers say as many as 3,000 cars took part. The protestersdrove around a major highway that surrounds the capital. People without carsstood along the road and waved white cloths. Local police say 300 cars tookpart in the protest.

French President Nicholas Sarkozy hasdescribed new economic proposals for his country. The plans call for anincreased tax on goods and services and a cut in employers' payroll taxes. Theproposals are aimed at improving France's employment. Nearly three millionpeople in France are out of work. Mr. Sarkozy announced the proposals on atelevision broadcast Sunday. France will elect a new president in April.

InAthens Sunday, Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos met with leaders of thecountry's three main political parties. He said they all agreed on measures toreduce the government's debt.

InBurma, democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has campaigned for elections to beheld April 1. Thousands of cheering supporters lined the roads of several townsin the Dawei area to see the Nobel Peace Prize winner on Sunday. She is makingher first political trip outside Rangoon since declaring she would run foroffice. Huge crowds called out "Long live Aung San Suu Kyi." She toldthe crowds "There is a lot to be done to build the country that we allwant." Aung San Suu Kyi is campaigning in the coastal area to gain supportfor another candidate running for parliament. She will make similar trips toother areas before campaigning for her own seat.

Police in Bangladesh fired guns and used teargas on protesters at opposition gatherings Sunday. The police attacks in thetown of Chandpur and Laksmipur killed at least four and injured more than 200others. Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists and their Islamist allies weredemanding a return to an earlier voting system. The government of PrimeMinister Sheikh Hasina ended the system. Officials say the protesters threwstones and attempted to break through police barriers. Similar clashes werereported in towns across the country.

Government-owned companies from Bangladesh andIndia have agreed to build a power center in southern Bangladesh. The PowerDevelopment Board of Bangladesh and the National Thermal Power Company of Indiasigned the agreement Sunday in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka. Coal will beused to operate the power center. It will cost $1.5-billion to build.Bangladesh suffers from power shortages, which are especially severe during thehot summer months. Some factories stop operating.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moonhas told African leaders it is time for them to respect the rights ofhomosexuals. Mr. Ban spoke in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the yearly meeting ofAfrican Union leaders. He said discrimination toward homosexuals has causedsome governments to treat its citizens badly. Homosexuality is against the lawin many African countries. South Africa is the only African nation where gayrights and same sex marriage are recognized.
