Dai Gang Wei, 23, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday to engaging in prostitution through an unlawful business and to possessing tainted property while he held the casual taxi job between July and December last year. Prosecutor Sergeant Robin Rochfort said Wei was studying a bachelors degree in Australia, had a student visa and a life which was almost wholly funded by his parents in China. He said Wei was discovered when police arrested the ringleader of a Brisbane-based prostitution syndicate known only as "Jessica" late last year. Sgt Rochfort said police searched Wei's inner-city apartment and found several messages to and from the ringleader, who was also known as "Vi" or "Vivian", on his iPhone on December 8.
During the search, Wei took police to a grey-coloured Holden sedan which had been parked in his garage and showed them a Garmin navigation device - which he allegedly used to take the woman to various addresses - and a plastic bag containing women's lingerie. Sgt Rochfort said Wei received $30 in cash per trip for driving sex workers employed by the syndicate to and from various jobs around Brisbane. The court was told Wei took the money to help supplement an allowance he received from his parents while he was living and studying in Australia.
